What is RF microneedling?

RF microneedling, also called fractional radiofrequency or the gold needle treatment, passes very fine needles into the skin and releases radiofrequency energy from their tips. The controlled heat prompts repair and new collagen, aiming to improve fine lines, acne scars, texture and mild laxity. Numbing cream is applied first, and treatment takes about 35–40 minutes, around an hour in total. Redness usually lasts from a few hours to a day, and most people are back to their routine within a day. Most need 2–4 sessions; results are clearest 3–6 months after the first.

What it can do

  • Improve the look of acne scars
  • Soften fine lines and refine texture
  • Help mild laxity on the face and neck
  • Improve the look of stretch marks

What it cannot do

  • Replace surgery for marked sagging
  • Reliably clear sun spots or pigmentation
  • Flatten deep or raised scars; scar revision may be needed
  • Show the full result after one session

Is it right for you?

Suitability is confirmed at an in-person examination of your skin, scars and medical history.

Usually a good fit if

  • Acne scarring or uneven texture
  • Fine lines or early laxity on the face, neck or décolletage
  • Stretch marks
  • Darker skin types, in which it was reported to be well tolerated

Better to wait or consider alternatives if

  • Marked sagging that needs a surgical lift
  • An active infection or acne flare in the area
  • Blood thinners, pregnancy, a pacemaker or metal implants: discuss these first
  • Expecting sun spots to clear

Techniques

The principle is the same in every RF microneedling device; needle depth and energy are set for your skin and each area.

RF microneedling (gold needle)

Fine, often insulated needles, gold-coated in some devices, enter the skin and release radiofrequency heat at their tips. The tiny controlled injuries trigger repair and new collagen.

Best for

Scars, texture, fine lines and mild laxity

Radiofrequency without needles

Radiofrequency can also heat deeper tissue through the skin surface, without needles. It is a different treatment aimed at tightening.

Best for

Laxity rather than scars or texture

How Dr. İlker approaches RF microneedling

Op. Dr. Bilgehan İlker is a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, trained at Dokuz Eylül University. She uses this treatment for acne scars, fine lines, pores, stretch marks and ageing skin on the neck and décolletage, setting the number of sessions person by person.

For wrinkles she often combines it with anti-wrinkle injections and laser skin rejuvenation.

  • Numbing first Numbing cream goes on before treatment; sessions take about 35–40 minutes, depending on the area.
  • Honest about pigment Evidence for pigment problems is thin, so clearing spots is not promised.
  • Open about the device You can ask which device is used and its approval status.

The treatment, step by step

A session takes about an hour from start to finish.

  1. Consultation

Your skin, scars and goals are assessed, and medicines that affect bleeding are reviewed.

  2. Numbing

Numbing cream is applied and left to work.

  3. Treatment

The handpiece is pressed to the skin in passes; needles and radiofrequency heat start the repair process.

  4. Finishing

Pinpoint bleeding or slight bruising may show. You get aftercare and sun-protection advice.

  5. Next session

Most people need 2–4 sessions; spacing is set in your plan.

Your days in Istanbul

No hospital stay; a course of 2–4 sessions means more than one visit.

  1. Examination

    Before your first session

Arrive in time for an in-person examination; the number of sessions is agreed then.

  2. About an hour

    Treatment day

Numbing, treatment and advice, then back to your plans.

  3. Next steps

    Before you fly home

Redness usually fades within a day. Agree your next session and whom to contact.

Recovery, day by day

This is the typical pattern; yours may differ.

  1. During treatment

    Prickling

Prickling and warmth, eased by numbing cream.

  2. Hours 0–24

    Redness

Mild redness for a few hours to a day; sometimes pinpoint bleeding or slight bruising.

  3. Days 2–3

    Routine

Most people are back to their routine; use sunscreen.

  4. Weeks 1–2

    Repair begins

Collagen remodelling is slow, so little may show yet.

  5. Month 1

    Course continues

    Further sessions follow your plan.

  6. Months 3–6

    Main change

Results are usually clearest 3–6 months after the first session.

  7. Beyond 6 months

    Maintenance

Improvement can continue; how long it lasts is not well studied.

  • New dark or light patches of skin

In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

Aftercare at home

  • Use sunscreen daily and avoid tanning
  • Cleanse gently with the products you are advised to use
  • Do not pick or scrub treated skin
  • Ask before restarting acids or retinoids
  • Report blistering, discharge or lasting redness promptly

Risks and how they are reduced

A 2021 review of high-quality studies found it effective and well tolerated, including in darker skin, but risks remain.

Risk is reduced by examining your skin first, checking medicines that affect bleeding, setting depth and energy for each area, a sterile single-use needle tip and sun protection afterwards.

Risks and how they are reduced
RiskHow often

Redness

Mild redness for a few hours to about a day.

Common

Pinpoint bleeding and bruising

More likely if you take blood thinners.

Common

Burns or blistering

Report them straight away so they can be treated promptly.

Rare

Infection

Any break in the skin can become infected; watch for discharge or fever.

Rare

Serious complications

In October 2025 the US FDA issued a safety communication on possible risks with some uses. Dermatologists responded that treatment requires sound knowledge of facial anatomy, including nerves and muscles.

Rare

Results and how long they last

Change is gradual because new collagen forms slowly. Results are usually clearest 3–6 months after the first session and can keep improving beyond 6 months.

Most research covers skin rejuvenation and acne scars; only two good-quality studies looked at melasma. Results vary from person to person.

How long it lasts: There is no firm data on how long results last; your skin keeps ageing, so maintenance is discussed individually.

With any surgical or interventional procedure, results vary from person to person. We recommend a detailed consultation with your doctor before any procedure.

Questions to ask at your consultation

Take these to any surgeon you see — including us.

  1. Which device will you use, and what is its approval or CE status?
  2. What is your specialist training, and who performs the treatment?
  3. How many sessions do I need, and how far apart?
  4. What is the plan if I get a burn, blister or infection?
  5. What does each session include, and what costs extra?
  6. Whom do I contact after I fly home?

What shapes your plan and quote

Prices are not published. After assessment you receive a personal written plan stating what is included.

  • The number of sessions
  • The size and number of areas treated
  • Whether laser or injections are combined
  • How many visits to Istanbul you need

We do not publish prices: every plan is personal and is written for you after your assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold needle treatment?

It is another name for RF microneedling. Very fine needles, gold-coated in some devices, enter the skin and release radiofrequency energy at their tips. The controlled heat starts a repair process that builds new collagen. 'Gold' describes the coating; the principle is the same as in other RF microneedling devices.

Does RF microneedling hurt?

Numbing cream is applied first, and Cleveland Clinic describes the treatment as low in pain with little downtime. Most people feel prickling and warmth. How it feels varies between people and between areas, so speak up if a pass feels uncomfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually 2–4 sessions are recommended, and most people have 2–3. Op. Dr. Bilgehan İlker sets the number for each person, based on the concern, the area and how your skin responds to the first session. The spacing is part of your written plan.

When will I see results?

Results build gradually because new collagen forms slowly. The clearest change usually shows 3–6 months after the first session, and improvement can continue beyond 6 months. Comparing with photos taken before treatment helps you and Dr. İlker judge the change fairly.

How long does the redness last?

Usually from a few hours to about a day. Cleveland Clinic describes redness for around 24 hours, while Dr. İlker notes that it usually fades within a few hours. Pinpoint bleeding or slight bruising can also occur. Most people are back to their routine within a day.

Does it work for acne scars?

Acne scars are among the uses studied in good-quality trials, and a 2021 review found RF microneedling effective and repeatable for them. Deep or raised scars may need other treatments, including surgical scar revision; which approach fits your scars is assessed at examination.

Is it suitable for darker skin?

Generally yes, after assessment. The 2021 review reported that RF microneedling is well tolerated in darker skin types, in which some lasers carry a higher risk of pigment change. Your skin type and history are still checked in person before treatment.

RF microneedling or laser?

They work differently: RF microneedling delivers heat through needles, while laser skin rejuvenation uses light. Neither suits everyone; the choice depends on your concern, skin type and how much downtime you can take. Dr. İlker often combines both for wrinkles, with anti-wrinkle injections.

Will it clear sun spots or pigmentation?

It should not be relied on for that. Dr. İlker uses it for tone and spots, but the 2021 review found only two good-quality studies on pigment problems such as melasma. It may help tone and texture; for spots, other options are discussed at consultation.

How long should I stay in Istanbul?

One session needs a short stay: about an hour of treatment, no hospital stay and redness that usually settles within a day. Plan time for the examination first. A course of 2–4 sessions means repeat visits, so agree the dates before booking flights.
