Fox eye lift in Istanbul
The fox eye look is a lifted outer brow and a more upward-slanting outer eye corner. This page explains which methods create it, how long each lasts and the risks.
- Operation time Threads about 1 hour; surgery 30 min–3 hours
- Hospital stay Day procedure
- Time in Istanbul About 7 days for threads; 7–10 after surgery
- Back to work Threads 3–5 days; canthoplasty about a week
What is a fox eye lift?
A fox eye lift (also called a cat eye or almond eye lift) is a popular name for procedures that lift the outer eye corner and the brow tail upwards and outwards. It is not a standardised medical operation: no peer-reviewed study of a procedure by that name was found. Depending on where the change needs to come from, the look is created with temporary threads, a surgical brow-tail lift, or surgery that reshapes the outer eye corner (canthoplasty or canthopexy). Recovery takes from 3–5 days after threads to 2–4 weeks after canthoplasty.
What it can do
- Lift the tail of the brow upwards and outwards
- Change the tilt or shape of the outer eye corner (canthoplasty)
- Give a temporary lift without incisions, using threads
- Be combined with blepharoplasty or a brow lift
What it cannot do
- Copy a filtered photo or someone else's eyes
- Last with threads alone: their effect is temporary
- Remove excess eyelid skin or correct marked sagging
Is it right for you?
The right option depends on where the look would come from: the brow, the eye corner or the skin. Suitability is decided at an in-person examination of your eyes and face.
Usually a good fit if
- The outer part of your brow sits low
- Your outer eye corner slants downwards or your lower lid is lax
- You prefer a non-surgical option and accept that threads are temporary
- Your eyes are healthy, without dry eye or problems closing them
Better to wait or consider alternatives if
- You have dry eye or difficulty closing your eyes, which canthoplasty can worsen
- You have marked skin sagging, where threads have only a limited, temporary effect
- You are over 50 and considering threads: dimpling and infection are more frequent after 50
- You hope to match a filtered image or another person's eyes
- You have a skin infection where threads would go, or you are under 18
Techniques
Fox eye describes a look, so the method depends on what needs to move; options can be combined.
Thread lift
Under local anaesthesia, absorbable barbed threads (PDO, PLLA or PCL) are passed under the skin from small entry points in the temple to lift the brow tail. The effect is temporary: at least 6 months with PDO, two to three times longer with PLLA, and 1–3 years according to Cleveland Clinic.
Best for
A temporary lift without surgery
Temporal brow lift
Small incisions in the temple hair allow the outer brow to be lifted and fixed; it is long-lasting, though ageing continues.
Best for
A low outer brow
Lateral canthoplasty
The tendon and muscle at the outer eye corner are tightened and repositioned to change its shape or tilt (Cleveland Clinic's almond eye procedure). Unwanted results after cosmetic canthoplasty are reported as not rare.
Best for
Changing the tilt of the outer eye corner
Canthopexy
The outer corner of the lower lid is tightened without cutting the tendon, a smaller change than canthoplasty.
Best for
A lax lower lid or a subtle change

How Dr. İlker approaches a fox eye lift
Op. Dr. Bilgehan İlker is a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, trained at Dokuz Eylül University. As a fox eye lift is a look, not a defined operation, the consultation starts by finding what would create it in your face.
Your eye health is checked first, and temporary and surgical options are explained plainly, including what it would take to undo each.
- Source first Brow position, eye-corner tilt, lid laxity and skin quality are examined before a method is suggested.
- Eyes checked Dryness and eye closure are assessed, because eye-corner surgery can affect them.
- Consent in writing You sign consent only after your questions are answered, with time to think.
The operation, step by step
Threads take about an hour; eye-corner surgery takes 30 minutes to 3 hours.
-
Consultation and eye check
Finding the source of the change; checking dryness, eye closure and lid laxity.
-
Anaesthesia
Local for threads; local or general for canthoplasty; sedation or general for a brow lift.
-
Entry points or incisions
Small entry points for threads, a small incision near the eye corner for canthoplasty, or small incisions in the temple hair.
-
Lifting
Threads suspend the brow tail; in canthoplasty the tendon is repositioned and fixed; in a brow lift the tissue is lifted and secured.
-
Closing and going home
Canthoplasty is closed with stitches; threads need little or no closure. You go home the same day with a companion.
Your days in Istanbul
Plan around the method you choose; your own dates are confirmed after your examination.
-
Examination
Before treatment
Arrive in time for an in-person examination at least 48 hours beforehand, as BAAPS advises; before general anaesthesia, it suggests arriving at least 72 hours ahead.
-
Home the same day
Procedure day
Return to your accommodation with a companion, use cold compresses and sleep with your head raised.
-
A final check
Before you fly home
Plan about 7 days after threads, or 7–10 days after canthoplasty or a brow lift. ASPS advises waiting 7–10 days after facial procedures before flying; after threads, your surgeon may allow earlier travel.
Recovery, day by day
Typical ranges from ASPS and Cleveland Clinic; your own instructions come first.
- Day 1
Swelling and pulling
Swelling, bruising and mild pain are common, and threads feel tight. Use cold compresses (ice in 15-minute spells after canthoplasty) and sleep with your head raised.
- Days 2–3
Temporary unevenness
After canthoplasty the eyes can look different in size for a while. Skip make-up for a few days after threads.
- Week 1
Out in public
After threads, swelling usually settles within about 5 days. After canthoplasty, plan a week of rest and a check in the first week.
- Week 2
Fewer limits
For 2 weeks after threads, avoid strenuous exercise and wide facial or jaw movements.
- Weeks 3–4
Healing
Canthoplasty usually heals in 2–4 weeks; avoid pools and saunas for 3 weeks.
- Months 2–3
Scar fading
A canthoplasty scar can show for 2–3 months. Use sun protection and dark glasses.
- Month 12
Longer term
With PDO threads, the lift may soften from around 6 months; in one meta-analysis, satisfaction fell from 98% early on to 88% in the long term. Surgical results last longer.

- Swelling that gets worse rather than better, or lasts more than 48 hours after threads
- Severe pain
- A wound that does not heal, fever or pus-like discharge
- Any change in your vision
In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
Aftercare at home
- Do not rub your eyes, and keep water and skincare off incisions until allowed.
- Keep your head raised and use cold compresses.
- After threads: no face washing for 24 hours, no make-up for a few days and no moisturiser for a few weeks.
- Wear sun protection and dark sunglasses.
- After canthoplasty, wear glasses instead of contact lenses until your surgeon allows lenses.
Risks and how they are reduced
Risks depend on the method. Thread lifts have pooled data from 26 studies; evidence for cosmetic canthoplasty is thinner.
Matching the method to the cause, a thorough eye check, stopping nicotine and blood thinners on medical advice and careful aftercare reduce risk.
| Risk | How often |
|---|---|
Swelling and bruisingThe most common effect after threads, in 35% of patients, and usually short-lived. | Common |
Dimpling, visible threads, altered sensationAfter threads: dimpling in about 10%, altered sensation in 6% and visible or palpable threads in 4%. Threads can be removed if you are unhappy. | Common |
Infection or extrusionEach occurs in about 2% after threads; extrusion is less frequent with absorbable threads. | Uncommon |
Canthoplasty risksDry eye, difficulty closing the eye, scarring, bleeding, infection, a changed eye shape or asymmetry; unwanted results after cosmetic canthoplasty are reported as not rare. | Varies |
Brow-lift risksNumbness, hair loss at the incisions, asymmetry and, rarely, weakness of the forehead nerve. | Uncommon |
Results and how long they last
Threads give an immediate lift that fades gradually; long-term data are limited. Canthoplasty heals in 2–4 weeks, and its scar can be visible for 2–3 months.
Cleveland Clinic describes canthoplasty as permanent, though long-term data on cosmetic canthoplasty are limited.
How long it lasts: Threads are temporary; surgical options are long-lasting, but ageing continues.
With any surgical or interventional procedure, results vary from person to person. We recommend a detailed consultation with your doctor before any procedure.

Frequently asked questions
What is fox eye surgery?
It is not one operation. Fox eye is a popular name for methods that lift the outer eye corner and brow tail: a thread lift, a temporal brow lift or canthoplasty. The right one depends on what creates the look in your face.
Is a fox eye lift permanent?
It depends on the method. Threads are temporary, lasting months to a few years, and long-term evidence is weak. Canthoplasty and a brow-tail lift are surgical and long-lasting, although your face keeps ageing and data on cosmetic canthoplasty are limited.
How long does a fox eye thread lift last?
Sources report at least 6 months for PDO threads and two to three times longer for PLLA threads; Cleveland Clinic gives 1–3 years. A 2025 review found the long-term evidence insufficient, so it is wise to plan for a temporary result.
What are the risks of a fox eye lift?
After threads, the most frequent problems are swelling (35%), dimpling (10%) and altered sensation (6%). Canthoplasty carries risks of dry eye, difficulty closing the eye and scarring, and unwanted results are reported as not rare. Your examination shows which risks apply to you.
Can a fox eye lift be reversed?
Threads can be removed if you are unhappy with them. Undoing canthoplasty or a brow lift would need another operation, which is one reason to choose carefully and to talk through the least invasive option that fits. Ask about this before any procedure, not after.
How long is fox eye recovery?
After threads, swelling and bruising usually settle in about 5 days, and most people go out after 3–5 days. After canthoplasty, plan about a week of rest; full healing takes 2–4 weeks, and the scar can show for 2–3 months.
Fox eye lift or blepharoplasty: what is the difference?
They do different things. Blepharoplasty removes excess eyelid skin and fat, while a fox eye lift changes the position of the brow tail and the outer eye corner. The two can be planned together when both are needed. Your examination shows which applies to you.
What is the difference between canthoplasty and canthopexy?
Canthoplasty reshapes the outer eye corner by repositioning its tendon and muscle, and can change the corner's tilt. Canthopexy tightens the outer corner of the lower lid without cutting the tendon, so it is a smaller intervention with a more limited change.
Can men have a fox eye lift?
The medical sources make no distinction between men and women. Men's brows are usually less arched than women's, so any plan is shaped around your own features and the look you want, rather than a standard template. Expectations are discussed openly at the consultation.
How long should I stay in Istanbul for a fox eye lift?
About 7 days after threads, although your surgeon may allow earlier travel, and 7–10 days after canthoplasty or a brow lift. ASPS advises waiting 7–10 days after facial procedures before flying. Your own dates are set after your examination in person.
Medical informationThe information on this page is general information only. It is not medical advice and does not replace a diagnosis or treatment. Every surgical and interventional procedure carries risks, which will be explained to you in detail during your consultation.
