What is jawline filler?

Jawline filler is a non-surgical treatment that places hyaluronic acid gel along the jaw, from the earlobe to the chin, and sometimes into the chin itself. It sharpens the jaw's edge so the face and neck look more clearly separated. The change is visible at once and most people go straight back to their day, while swelling and bruising settle over one to two weeks. The effect is temporary, typically lasting up to about 12 months.

What it can do

  • Define a soft or blurred jawline from earlobe to chin
  • Add projection to a small or receding chin
  • Give a more angular lower face

What it cannot do

  • Remove fat under the chin; see chin liposuction
  • Tighten loose neck skin or reshape bone; that needs surgery such as chin surgery
  • Last for good: the gel is gradually absorbed

Is it right for you?

It suits people concerned with jaw shape rather than fat or loose skin.

Usually a good fit if

  • Your jawline has lost definition through genetics, weight change or ageing
  • Your chin looks small or set back in profile
  • You want a temporary, adjustable change rather than surgery
  • You are healthy, with no skin infection in the area

Better to wait or consider alternatives if

  • Fullness under the chin or loose neck skin is the main concern
  • You have a bleeding disorder, severe allergies or an allergy to lidocaine
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 22 or prone to keloid scars
  • You hope for a dramatic change to your bone structure

Techniques

Treatment is planned in zones.

Jawline and jaw angle

Gel is placed along the lower border of the jaw towards the angle, sharpening the edge. In the US, one product is approved specifically for this, lasting up to 12 months.

Best for

A soft or blurred jawline

Chin

Filler adds forward projection to balance the profile. Op. Dr. Bilgehan İlker includes the chin when the jawline alone would look out of balance.

Best for

A small or receding chin

Jaw muscle injections

Anti-wrinkle injections into a strong chewing muscle can slim a square lower face. This is an off-label use of the medicine.

Best for

A wide lower face with bulky jaw muscles

How Dr. İlker approaches jawline filler

Op. Dr. Bilgehan İlker is a specialist in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, trained at Dokuz Eylül University. Her own pages explain that the amount of filler can only be decided at examination: one syringe for some faces, more for others, especially if the chin is included.

As a surgeon, she can also say when surgery or fat removal would serve you better.

  • Examination before amounts The number of syringes is set after examining your face, not quoted in advance.
  • Fine needles Fine needles, with numbing cream if you want it.
  • Written consent Side effects and rare serious risks are explained before you agree.

The treatment, step by step

A typical appointment:

  1. Consultation

Op. Dr. Bilgehan İlker assesses your jaw, chin and neck, and reviews your medicines and allergies.

  2. Marking and photographs

Injection points are marked and photographs taken.

  3. Numbing

Numbing cream is applied if you wish; many gels also contain lidocaine.

  4. Injection

Gel is placed along the jaw and, if planned, the chin, then shaped.

  5. Finish

Ice may be applied before you leave.

Your days in Istanbul

A short stay is enough, but avoid treatment just before a flight.

  1. Consultation in person

    Before your treatment

Arrive early enough for an unhurried examination; treatment follows once you agree the plan and sign consent.

  2. Stay close by

    Treatment day

Serious complications can show during or soon after treatment, so stay in Istanbul at least overnight.

  3. A last look

    Before you fly home

Swelling should be easing. Know whom to contact if unusual pain or skin changes appear.

Recovery, day by day

Normal life resumes at once; the jaw settles over one to two weeks.

  1. Hours 0–24

    Swollen and tender

Swelling, redness, tenderness and possible bruising. Use ice; avoid exercise, sun and sunbeds.

  2. Days 2–3

    Hands off

No pressing or massaging the jaw for three days.

  3. Days 4–7

    Easing

Bruising fades and the line becomes clearer.

  4. Weeks 1–2

    Settled shape

Most side effects have cleared, so the final line can be judged.

  5. Month 1

    Review

A small top-up is considered now, if advised.

  6. Months 2–12

    Gradual fading

The gel is slowly absorbed and definition softens.

  7. Any time later

    Delayed reactions

Rarely, lumps or inflammation appear weeks or months later; report them.

Aftercare at home

  • Use a wrapped cold pack for short periods on the first day.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Keep out of strong sun and sunbeds while swelling settles.
  • Do not press or massage the jaw for three days.
  • Keep a note of the product used and the date.

Risks and how they are reduced

Jawline filler shares the risks of all fillers; most are mild and short-lived.

Examination first, reversible hyaluronic acid, slow injection of small amounts and stopping at any warning sign reduce risk; a blocked vessel is treated urgently with hyaluronidase.

Risks and how they are reduced
RiskHow often

Bruising, swelling and tenderness

Common for a few days; most settle within one to two weeks.

Common

Lumps or asymmetry

Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if they persist.

Uncommon

Infection or delayed nodules

Can appear weeks or months later and may need treatment.

Uncommon

Allergic reaction

To the gel, lidocaine or hyaluronidase; hyaluronidase is riskier with a bee-sting allergy.

Uncommon

Filler moving

Gel can migrate from where it was placed.

Rare

Blocked blood vessel

Filler in or pressing on a vessel can damage skin, affect vision or cause a stroke. No area of the face carries zero risk.

Rare

Results and how long they last

The new line shows at once, though early swelling can exaggerate it; judge the result after one to two weeks.

As the gel is absorbed, definition softens gradually. Repeat treatment maintains it.

How long it lasts: Up to about 12 months with a product approved for the jawline; hyaluronic acid fillers generally last 6–12 months.

With any surgical or interventional procedure, results vary from person to person. We recommend a detailed consultation with your doctor before any procedure.

Questions to ask at your consultation

Take these to any surgeon you see — including us.

  1. How many syringes do you expect I need, and why?
  2. Which product will you use, and is it meant for the jaw?
  3. Would surgery, fat removal or no treatment suit me better?
  4. What happens if the result is uneven?
  5. Is hyaluronidase on site, and what is your plan for a blocked vessel?
  6. Whom do I contact once I am home?

What shapes your plan and quote

Prices are not published. Gel amounts vary widely, so your written plan follows the examination.

  • How much product your jaw and chin need
  • Whether the chin is treated too
  • The product chosen
  • Any combined treatment

We do not publish prices: every plan is personal and is written for you after your assessment.

Frequently asked questions

How long does jawline filler last?

With a product approved for the jawline, results can last up to about 12 months; hyaluronic acid fillers in general last around 6–12 months. It varies with the product and the person. Definition fades gradually, and repeat treatment maintains it.

How many syringes of filler do I need?

There is no standard amount. One syringe may be enough for some faces; others need two or more, especially if the chin is treated. Op. Dr. Bilgehan İlker decides after examining you, as quoting an amount without seeing your face would mislead you.

Does jawline filler hurt?

Fine needles are used, numbing cream is available, and many gels contain lidocaine to reduce discomfort during injection. Afterwards the jaw can feel tender and swollen for a few days. How much you feel varies from one person to another.

What should I avoid after jawline filler?

Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours, keep out of strong sun and sunbeds while swelling settles, and do not press or massage the jaw for three days. Contact the clinic straight away about unusual pain or any skin colour change.

What are the side effects?

Bruising, swelling, redness and tenderness are common and short-lived. Less often, lumps, infection, unevenness or allergic reactions occur. Rarely, filler blocks a blood vessel, which can damage skin, affect vision or cause a stroke. That is an emergency and needs treatment straight away.

Can jawline filler move?

Filler migration, where gel shifts from where it was placed, is a rare risk reported to the US Food and Drug Administration. If you later notice a new lump or change in shape, report it; hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if needed.

Can jawline filler be dissolved?

Yes, if it is hyaluronic acid: an enzyme called hyaluronidase breaks it down. Other materials, such as calcium hydroxylapatite, cannot be dissolved this way. Hyaluronidase can itself cause allergic reactions, particularly in people allergic to bee stings, so mention any allergies.

Jawline filler or chin surgery?

Filler adds temporary volume and definition with no recovery period. A lasting change to the bone needs chin surgery or an implant; excess fat or loose neck skin needs liposuction or a neck lift. Dr. İlker discusses these options at examination.

Do men have jawline filler?

Yes. Dr. İlker's own pages describe jawline filler for men who want a more defined, angular lower face, as well as for women. In both cases, the amount and placement are planned for each face individually rather than following a set template.

How long should I stay in Istanbul for jawline filler?

One to two days is usually enough: a consultation, the treatment and a night nearby in case anything unusual develops. Bruising can show for a few days, so avoid booking photos or events straight afterwards. Your written plan sets the dates.
